Pregnancy Due Calculator - All You Need To Know

You have taken a pregnancy test, and it turns out to be positive. You are ecstatic and cannot keep calm. You are going to be a mom! The truth is, once you have processed this fantastic news that you are expecting your little bundle of joy, your thoughts will turn to the practicality of the situation. You will want to know when your due date will be. Worry not, this is where the due date calculator comes in. So, what is it and what do you need to get the calculated due date that you will give birth? Here at Honest Birth Talk, let us find out below:

How Does The Due Date Calculator Work?

Most expectant mothers are not aware that they are pregnant until they miss their first period, which, by then, they could be five weeks along. Most people do not know their days of ovulation or when they conceived hence a due date calculator will calculate the due date based on your last menstrual cycle (LMP). It uses the following method:

• The First Day Of Your Menstrual Period.

Your due date is usually estimated to be around forty weeks after the day you got your period. Your cycle will be assumed to be 28 days long which means that the ovulation occurs on the fourteenth day.

Therefore, the calculator will add 40 weeks to your last period. This method is known as the Naegele’s rule. It assumes that the cycle is 28 days which is not the case for most women. Using this rule, the due date is typically 2-4 days too early so the better estimate would be adding 40 weeks and three days from your LMP. The other options are:

• Using The Conception Date.

If you have an irregular menstrual cycle, then you can choose this option on your due date calculator. In this case, the LMP will not work for you. If you remember your conception date, then this is the best option for you.

• Using An Ultrasound Scan.

You may find that you cannot pinpoint the exact time you conceived or the date of your last menstrual period. Do not lose hope. Other clues may help you such as going for an ultrasound scan. It is however not done by all doctors at this stage. Some of them will only do it if the LMP and physical exam can't determine your date. They mainly do it if you are 35 years of age or older if your periods are irregular or have a history of having miscarriages. You can put this on your due date calculator. You will be asked to give the date of the ultrasound and how long you were told you were along. With these details, your due date will be estimated.

What Is An Estimated Due Date?

An estimated due date(EDD) is the best guess to when the baby might be born based on the due date calculator. You should, however, note that only 4% of babies are born on their exact due date. Majority of the babies are born within the two weeks before and two weeks after the due date window. Using this calculator will, therefore, give you a rough idea so that you can prepare for the baby’s arrival.

Can I Plan My Due Date?

You may want to plan your pregnancy, and the best way to do this is to try and time the time of conceiving. However, it does not always work like magic, and one cannot get pregnant when they want to. It takes some time hence you may not be able to plan when you will be giving birth.

Can My Due Date Change?

Yes, it can. It should not be a cause to worry since it may occur due to many reasons. Some of them could be that your periods were irregular, the early ultrasound date was off, or the first ultrasound was done in the second trimester. It could also be because you have an abnormal fundal height or the levels of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a protein that the baby makes is outside the normal range.

Using a due date calculator is a good idea for any expectant mother since it helped them plan accordingly for the new addition to their lives. Note that the date may change as you continue with the pregnancy depending on what is observed by the check-ups. However, using these calculators give you a rough idea of when to expect.
